Derby Travels Eight Miles For Home Field Advantage to Win Rose Hill Tourney

If you’re gonna win a tournament, you might as well use some home field advantage so to speak with allowing your fans an opportunity to see you compete And that’s exactly what the Derby Panthers did with only having to travel eight miles east to win the Rose Hill Tournament. Derby is one of those 6A teams that when they’re on, they’re tough to beat. As a proven point, the Panthers week in and week out throughout the season have bounced around in the 6A team rankings from second to sixth keeping pollsters wondering which team is going to show up this week. One thing’s for certain though, and that is, the Panthers can be a team that can roar with the best of them while stalking its prey when provoked. Sparked by a couple of champions in Braden Tatum @ 120 and Tate Rusher @ 138 along with a couple of Runner-Ups, two Bronze Medalists and a 4th place finisher, it was just enough team balance with scoring of team points to finish ahead of six other schools from Class 4A that are all ranked in the top ten in their division.

Augusta ranked #1 and Chanute ranked # 5 in Class 4A , went toe-to-toe with one another and ended up finishing in a two-way tie for second place. Probably the tie was a little disappointing to both those teams since both are possibly looking back at opportunities where they could have secured a couple of wins to outlast one another. Nevertheless, Augusta’s string of winning three consecutive tournaments this season was snapped as they found themselves in unfamiliar territory without crowning a champion, but finishing with four Runner-Ups and a bronze medalist. Chanute on the other hand, managed to congratulate three of its wrestlers with winning Gold Medals that included Kolton Misener @ 113, Trey Dillow @ 132, and Ty Leedy @ 145 along with a 3rd and 4th place finisher.

The Rose Hill Rockets as the host school, likewise gave their fans a little something to cheer about with crowning a couple of champions as well with Johnny Leck @ 106 and Keegan Beavers @ 152 and placing two others in the top four.

Concordia was the only other team to see a couple of its wrestlers reach the top of the winners circle with champions Daniel Vines @ 126,Keyan Miller of Concordia @ 182. The rest of the tournament field was so evenly matched with talent in every weight that five other schools got in on the award ceremonies with witnessing Easton Boone of Valley Center @ 160, Brett Loader of Clay Center @ 170, Hayden Oviatt of Wamego @ 195, Bronx Wood of Andover Central @ 220, and Tony Caballero of Bonner Springs @ 285 all being crowned champions of their respective weight classes.
