Overland Park-Blue Valley Southwest Regional

Regional assignments have been made for all 36 teams competing in the Class 5A Tournament. Unlike last year due to Covid concerns with forcing a mandatory district tournament of eight teams each to address the growing concerns of spreading the virus, the field has once again grown to its original size of 18 teams per regional. Having said that, one doesn’t have to look very far to witness the quality of talent once again that is present in Class 5A which notably is known throughout Kansas wrestling circles as the toughest teams and best overall individual talent in the state.

In the Northern Regional at Blue Valley Southwest High School, look for the host school, the BVSW Timberwolves ranked #4 to be the favorites to win their regional. But don’t count out 5th and 6th ranked St. Thomas Aquinas and Mill Valley just yet, as they have some quality wrestlers that will be ones to reckon with. Not far behind as well, and ranked #9 will be Shawnee Heights that has some wrestlers that will make some noise of its own.

106: Tobius Kriner, a Junior for St. Thomas Aquinas ranked #3 gets the nod as the favorite to win this weight class. However, three other Honorable Mention wrestlers may have a say in the outcome featuring Brody Ballard of Basehor Linwood, JaDiz Simmons of Kansas City Piper and Kaden Markley of Blue Valley Southwest.

113: With the top five ranked wrestlers competing in the Valley Center regional, it makes way for Evan Vielhauer, a Sophomore for Basehor Linwood and ranked #6 to get the top ranking in the BVSW Regional. Challenges however, should be forthcoming from the likes of Honorable Mentions Robert Hickman of Mill Valley, Casey Bowlin of DeSoto, and Julian Long of Leavenworth.

120: Dillon Cooper, a Sophomore from Mill Valley ranked #1 should face a stiff challenge from Brock Ferguson, a Senior from Shawnee Heights ranked #5 in the finals. If one of those two gets upset along the way, look for that possibility to come from a number of Honorable Mentioned wrestlers with Justin Kruse of Topeka Seaman, Joshua Kozminski of Leavenworth, or Mio Cregan of St. James Academy.
