STERLING, CO – A trip west and one of the only out-of-state competitions of the year for the number-20 ranked Cloud County Community College wrestling team saw the T-Birds win six of seven contested matches to earn a 31-12 road dual victory over Northeastern Junior College inside the Bank of Colorado Events Center in Sterling, Colorado on Saturday, February 13th.

The dual victory allows Cloud County to move to 4-3 in dual matches this year while going a perfect 2-0 against non-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference opponents. Both non-conference dual victories have come from opponents from Colorado as the T-Birds defeated Otero in a home dual earlier this year.

CCCC would give up six points at 125 pounds with an open weight while also seeing the Plainsmen win the 174-pound bout by fall, but otherwise take care of business in the remaining seven matches. James Davis would get Cloud County on the board at 133 pounds with a fall to bounce back from a decision loss on Tuesday night while Michael Barfuss would earn a major decision victory to put the T-Birds up 10-6 in the dual.

Northeastern would be open at 149 pounds as Joel Ostrom would take a forfeit win before Tristin Hauck would grind out a 4-2 decision at 157 pounds to make it a 19-6 score. Freshman Cooper Mosier would then remain undefeated by earning a fall at 165 pounds while Brian Paxton would earn a 5-0 decision at 184 pounds and James Ferris coming away with a 9-7 decision victory at 197 pounds. Neither team would have a wrestler to fill the 285-pound weight class, leaving the final score at 31-12 in favor of the T-Birds.

What’s Next?

Cloud County will close out their first time around the conference on Tuesday, February 16th as the T-Birds will take on Colby Community College and Barton Community College in a double dual hosted by Colby. The Trojans are currently ranked number 19 in the current NJCAA wrestling rankings while the Cougars will enter Tuesday unranked.
