COLBY, Kan. – Getting the same outcome as their previous two Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference double duals, the number 20-ranked Cloud County Community College wrestling team would get a 42-15 road victory over Colby Community College before dropping a 43-11 decision to Barton in a neutral-site matchup at the Colby Community College double dual inside the Colby Community Building in Colby, Kansas on Thursday, February 18th.

Getting back to action following a 48-hour postponement due to weather, the T-Birds continue their season trend and now sit at 5-4 overall in dual action. Barton would win both of their duals on the day while the host Trojans would drop both duals to close out the first half of KJCCC wrestling action for the T-Birds.

Against Colby:

Open weight classes for both teams would mean free points on both sides as CCCC would be open at 125 pounds and 285 pounds while the host Trojans would give up an open weight at 149 pounds. In the remaining seven weight classes, the T-Birds would manage to take six of the seven matches with all six victories coming by way of fall. Kicking things off at 133 pounds would be number-four ranked James Davis who would earn his second win of the year with a fall at the 4:13 mark over Rush Fannon while Michael Barfuss would end things just under a minute into the second period of his match at 141 pounds against Kody Hahn with a fall at 3:55. Following the open weight by CCC at 149 pounds, Tylor Garcia would make his season debut for Cloud County and get a fall over Nathaniel Howerton at 5:25 while Cooper Mosier would remain unbeaten with a 6:05 fall over Noah Kleisen. In what would be Colby’s lone win of the dual against the T-Birds, Dakota Garrison would drop a tough-fought 6-3 decision at 174 pounds before seeing both Brian Paxton (184 pounds) and Zach Ferris (197 pounds) score six points each with falls to put the final tally at 42-15.

Against Barton:

A fresh and ready Cougar squad would take advantage of getting to wrestle against a CCCC squad that had just finished up with their first dual of the day as the T-Birds would once again give up an open weight at 125 pounds to begin the match in a 6-0 hole. At 133 pounds, Davis would be well on his way to victory before turning Silas Pineda onto his back late into a cradle that would turn into a fall with just nine seconds remaining in the match as Cloud County would get six points of their own to tie up the dual at 6-6. Barton would go on to win each of the next seven matches as Barfuss would lose 11-3 while both Jonny Crome and Tristin Hauck would face second-period falls. In the 165 pound match, Mosier would get injured against Stephen Duffy and be unable to return to allow the Cougars to score six more points as Paxton (174 pounds) and Micah Sterling (184 pounds) would also have troubles in defeats by fall. Ferris would put on another show at 197 pounds, thoroughly outworking Trezen Doren on his way to an 18-1 technical fall as the only point allowed by the Chapman, Kansas native would be an optional restart escape in order to score one final takedown and get the 15-point plus margin of victory. At heavyweight, freshman Thomas Orr would see his only action of the day come against Ayston Perez as the two would battle it out to the very end with Orr being forced to go for a late takedown trailing 3-2 that would allow Perez to score two points and hang on for a 5-2 decision victory.

What’s Next?

Familiar foes will be seen the next time out for Cloud County as the T-Birds will travel to Parsons, Kansas to take on Labette and Pratt in a double dual hosted by the Cardinals on Tuesday, February 23rd. CCCC split their duals against LCCC and PCC in their first times out, beating Labette at home while falling to the top-10 ranked Beavers in Pratt to open the year.
