5A State Tournament Recap

It’s nothing new, Goddard won its 8th straight Class 5A State Championship Title again as expected. Led by their three seniors winning individual championships with Jerrdon Fisher @ 152 winning his 3rd title, Quentin Saunders @ 182 winning his 4th title, and Kaden Glass @ 195 winning his first title after finishing runner-up twice before was adequate enough to help their team score 190.5 points. Heading into the State Tournament though, Goddard Head Coach, Brett Means mentioned he knew he had the team that could win state again, but was certainly worried about the Newton Railroaders as he believed they were the only legitimate team that could possibly overtake his Lions team. To win it all Means said, “the Lions can’t rely solely on its ranked wrestlers, we need a few of our non-ranked wrestlers to step it up a notch and place in the top six,” and three of their non-ranked wrestlers did just that. Collectively, Goddard qualified 12 wrestlers and placed 10, enough to take home the Championship Trophy and add it to their schools trophy case. With those type of results, its easy to see why they’re considered the best program in the state right now.

Blue Valley Southwest wrestled about as good as they possibly could with finishing as runner-ups scoring 168.5 points and placing 9 wrestlers in the top six. Any other time with placing that many wrestlers, one would think they would win a state tournament. Probably true, just not this one. A bright spot however for the Timberwolfs was that Hayden Mills @ 132 lbs became a Three-Time State Champion.

The Newton Railroaders placed seven wrestlers along with crowning a champion in Nick Treaster @ 113 lbs winning his 3rd state title to help his team finish 3rd in the team race with scoring 147.5 points.
