An In-Depth Preview of Class 3,2,1A Regionals

CLASS 3-2-1A REGIONAL

(February, 18-19)

Regional assignments have been made for the 87 teams competing in the Class 3,2,1A Tournaments. This is the critical time frame in a season when all teams try to step it up a notch with bringing out the best in each of their wrestlers to place in the top four with a chance to move on to the all important state tournament. For some regional weights classes, it’s going to be extremely challenging due to the possibility of having so many ranked wrestlers competing in the same regional. The same can be said for teams competing in the same regional where some top ten teams will have to battle one another for top honors. No where is that more apparent and and true than what the Norton Regional has to offer. Six teams ranked in the top team are in for an all-out brutal war fare as they are set to square off against one another. For years, coaches, wrestlers and fans have complained to KSHSAA of the unfair competitive disadvantage this is to teams and wrestlers with stacking the deck so to speak with putting so many quality teams and athletes in the same regional. Unfortunately, a regional is based of geographical locations. And based off that reasoning, each year we witness some quality wrestlers get beaten out that could probably place at state if the opportunity presented itself with equally dividing ranked teams up in an opposite regional. The best answers to the current situation with addressing regional assignments, is that our states best coaches preach and speak positively about the matter saying. “there’s no need to pointing fingers at anyone, or for that matter controlling bodies, if you get your wrestlers peeking at the right time no matter where or who the competition is against.”

Douglas Regional

Anthony/Harper-Chaparral, Burden-Central, Caney Valley, Cherokee-Southeast, Cherryvale, Cottonwood Falls-Chase County, Douglass, Erie, Eureka, Fredonia, Garden Plain, Halstead, Haven, Howard-West Elk, Humboldt, Kingman, Leon-Bluestem, Mound City-Jayhawk Linn, Rosalia-Flinthills, Uniontown, Whitewater-Remington

The Erie Royals ranked #10, enters the Douglas Regional as the overall team favorite to win the team championship. This due to the fact they are the only team ranked in the top ten in this regional and should produce some favorable results. However, there is a team that won’t concede a team title to the Royals just yet. Douglas with being the host team certainly can be considered very dangerous with some quality grapplers on their team. In addition, they most certainly will have home field advantage with the home crowd lending support for the Bulldogs.

106: Drayton Kennedy, a Senior from Erie ranked #1 and Clayton Considine, a Freshman from Halstead ranked #3, are the favorites to meet up in the finals. However, Keaton Bollman, a Freshman from Chaparral ranked #4 might spoil that thought, cause more than likely he’ll meet up with Consideine in the semi-finals.

113: Here’s another weight class that could go either way. It pits Evan Coble, a Sophomore from Howard-West Elk ranked #3, most likely to meet up with Seth Welch, a Freshman from Erie ranked #4. But here again, Kade Osborn, an Honorable Mention wrestler from Kingman better not be overlooked.

120: Corbin White, a Senior from Mound City-Jayhawk-Linn ranked #1, should have any easy path to winning it all since there are no other ranked wrestlers in his bracket.

126: Dustin Loughrie from Haven is an Honorable Mention wrestler in this weight class and he too, should find his way to the championship finals since he has no other ranked wrestlers in his weight.
