Wrestling Competes Well at Viking Open But Leave With Unfinished Business

Poteau, OK – The Neosho CC Wrestling traveled to Poteau, OK on Sat. and competed in the Viking Open hosted by Carl Albert State College.  NCAA I, NCAA II, NAIA and Junior College programs were all represented in the field of competition.

The tournament was very large, with 280 competitors and saw a 2 hour delay to the start do to technical issues and the tournament was eventually concluded early with the consolation semifinals and placing matches yet to be wrestled.

Jace Tapia (So., Bonner Springs, KS) had a very strong performance at 149lbs and wrestled his way into the finals. Jace won in the quarterfinals with a hard fought (6-5) win over Cowely’s  Alexzander Barajas.  In the semi finals, won an exciting overtime match (6-3) over Dawson Lapping of NEO and was set to face Mason Gordon of Carl Albert in the finals before the tournament was concluded.

Teyton Burns (Fr., Bristow, OK) at 133lbs, Terek White (Fr., El Dorado, KS at 174lbs, Joe Tapia (Fr., Bonner Springs, KS) at 184lbs, Dilen Barrington-Miller (Fr., Billings, MT) at 197lbs and Josh Phillips (Fr., Coffeyville, KS) at 197lbs were all still competing in the consolation bracket at the time the tournament was called.

Coach Matt Hansen said “Tapia had a great performance today and continues to improve. It was unfortunate that the tournament was concluded early, I think we would have had several guys come through the backside of the bracket and wrestling for 3rd place.”

The Panthers next Competition is on December 2nd at the Drury Open in Springfield, MO
