Rundown: In a year full of scheduling difficulties and other COVID related problems, the Newton TOC appears to be one of the few tournaments unaffected. While the field of teams is a little smaller than usual, the tournament still features the state’s top teams along with a few out of state powers. 4A #1 Andale will look to prove that they can compete with the big class powers in the state. They are coming off a first place finish at the Salina South Invitational. Six time defending state champions and current 5A #2 Goddard will look to bounce back after dropping a dual to Dodge City last weekend. 6A #3 Garden City will be looking to turn things around after going 2-3 at the Dodge City Duals. 5A #3 Maize comes into the weekend after an impressive 1st place finish at the Derby Invitational. Ark City was 4th at the Derby Invitational last weekend and is currently ranked 4th in 5A. Blanchard (OK) will be bringing a lot of talent to challenge Kansas’ best. They were fourth at the Cushing Invite last week and are currently ranked #4 in Oklahoma’s 4A division. 6A #5 Derby comes into the weekend after a strong showing at their home tournament, taking 3rd. 5A #7 Andover was 1st at the Augusta Invitational last week. Seneca (MO) is another out of state team with a solid group of wrestlers. They are currently ranked 7th in Missouri’s Class 2. 6A #9 Wichita West has an excellent group of upper weights. 5A #10 Bishop Carrol was 5th at the Derby Invitational. Stilwell (OK) is currently ranked 11th in Oklahoma’s 4A division.

Preview: We start off with the most interesting weight class. There are an astounding 5 #1 ranked wrestlers in this bracket. State Runner Up Cody Woods fell to Defending State Champion Nick Treaster by a score of 11-1 last weekend. Treaster is Currently 15-0 while Woods is 13-2. Andale’s Colton Miller was a State Qualifier a year ago and is coming off a 1st place finish at the Salina South invitational. Miller is currently 12-3 on the year. Blanchard’s Aden Sanders is coming off a 1st place finish at the Cushing Invitational and was 4th at the State Championships a year ago. The 5th #1 ranked wrestler is Seneca’s Brady Roark. He was 2nd at the State Championships last year as a freshman. Goddard’s Levi Glover and Andover Central’s Levi Glover will also be in the field.

Preview: This weight features some of the top 5A talent. Shabazz is a returning State Runner Up and dominated his way through the Derby Invitational last weekend. Shabazz holds a perfect record of 12-0. Root was 4th at the State Championships last year and is coming off a runner-up finish at the Augusta Invitational. He holds an impressive record of 8-1 on the season. Miller, a two State Qualifier, had an impressive 4-1 record at the Dodge City Duals last weekend.

Preview: The weight is headlined by three time State Placer Kael Pappan. Pappan defeated Maize’s Gomez by a score of 7-1 at last week’s Derby Invitational. Pappan is currently 10-1. Andale’s Owen Eck is one of the top freshmen. After winning the Salina South Invitational last weekend, he comes into this weekend with a 14-1 record. Stilwell’s Jayce Caviness was a state Runner Up as a freshman last year and is coming off a 1st place finish at the Cushing Invitational. Newton’s two time State Qualifier Collin Bybee is currently 14-1. Maize Standout Freshman Daniel Gomez and Seneca’s Brayden Thiel will also be in the field.

Preview: This weight is very deep in talent. Defending State Runner Up Alyeus Craig holds a perfect record of 19-0. He is coming off a 5-0 weekend at the Dodge City Duals, which included a first period pin over Garden City’s Heiman. The defending State Champion Hector Serratos comes into the tournament with a 14-1 record after winning the Augusta Invitational. Garden City’s Heiman was 5th at the state tournament last year. He went 3-2 at the Dodge City Duals, picking up a 13-3 win over Goddard’s Rothenberger.At the Derby Invitational State Runner Up Samuel Dickey picked up two wins over Maize State Placer Keton Patterson, including one by fall. 2019 State Champion and defending State Runner Up Braden Ledford also picked up a 3-1 win over Patterson. He also defeated State Qualifier Tate Rusher 14-5. Dickey is currently 11-4 and Ledford is 13-1. Patterson holds a record of 8-5. Two Time State Qualifier LaShawn Blick was 1st at the Augusta Invitational. Goddard’s Phoenix Rothenberger and Blanchard’s Levi Harris are also in the field.

Preview: Two time state Placer and defending State Champion Jerrdon Fisher is the frontrunner at this weight. He went 5-0 at the Dodge City Duals, which was his first competition of the year. He picked up a 9-2 decision over Garden City’s Sellers. Sellers was 3rd at last year’s State Tournament at 132lbs. He was 2-3 at the Dodge City Duals after moving up to 145lbs. Maize Freshman Ayden Flores was 2nd at the Derby Invitational. Blanchard’s James Tucker is another talented Freshman. Seneca’s Clayton Swadley was 6th at the State Championships in 2019.

Defending 5A State Champion Trig Tennant defeated defending 6A State Champion Cason Lindsey at the Derby Invitational by a score of 2-1 in tie breakers. Tennant also defeated Maize’s Ford 9-1. Lindsey defeated ford by a first period fall and also defeated Huerta 11-4. Tennant is currently 15-0 while Lindsey is 11-2. Three time State Placer Jace Fisher makes the bracket even more interesting. He was 4-1 at the Dodge City Duals and is currently 7-1 on the year. Freshman Jaden Ford was 3rd at the Derby Invitational, with a 9-4 win over Huerta. Andale Freshman Ian Aoud was 1st at the Augusta Invitational. State Qualifier Antonio Huerta was 5th at the Derby Invitational. Blanchard’s Ethan Warren is also in the field.

At the Derby Invitational three Time State Qualifier Matthew Morell defeated State Placer Tate Rusher in sudden victory 6-4. Rusher picked up two wins over State Qualifier Wyatt Bahm by scores of 6-0 and 10-2. Morell is currently 9-3 while Rusher is 14-3. Andover’s Gariety was 3rd at the Augusta Invitational. Hutchinson’s Weathers was 1st at the Wichita North Redskin Invite. Two time State Qualifier Britton Forsythe was 5th at the Augusta Invitational.

Two time State qualifier Ashton Ngo was 1st at the Augusta Invitational where he split matches with Andover Central’s Wood. Wood took the first match 5-3 and Ngo took the second match 3-2. Blanchard’s Colin Deaton was third at the Cushing Invitational. State Qualifier Bronx Wood was 2nd at the Augusta Invitational. Valley Center’s Dallas Gould was a State Qualifier last year.
