MIAA Announces 2022-23 Newcomers Academic Awards

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced its final academic honors for the 2022-23 academic year. The awards include Academic Excellence, Scholar-Athlete and Academic Honor Roll for all true first-year student-athletes and first-year transfer student-athletes.

A total of 1,046 first-year MIAA student-athletes from all 14 MIAA institutions received academic honors for their efforts in the classroom. To be considered as a first-year or transfer student-athlete, the individual had not completed two semesters, excluding summer terms, at their current institution when they competed in their sport.

The prestigious MIAA Academic Excellence Award was achieved by 138 first-year and transfer student-athletes. An MIAA Academic Excellence Award recipient must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of at least 4.00 at the certifying member institution. The honoree also must have at least two terms of grades reported at the certifying member institution, excluding summer terms. Six Jets earned a spot on the list; Chris Mitchell, Jackie Gold, Travia Smith, Lily Hilgenfeld, Monica Redondo, and Julia Reis. The Scholar Athlete list for first-year and transfer student-athletes includes over 50 student-athletes. To qualify as a Scholar Athlete an individual must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.50 at the certifying member institution. Outside of the classroom, the student-athlete must also earn All-MIAA honors. Jason Schneider, Ozioma Ajekwu, and Maylani Birckbichler were the three Jets named to the list. The achievement of Academic Honor Roll was accomplished by 1,046 student-athletes. To be recognized on the Academic Honor Roll, one must have a grade point average used by the institution for purposes of NCAA academic certification of 3.00 at the certifying member institution. 56 of those named to the list were from Newman.
