[Women's Wrestling] Women's Wrestling Finishes Season At NAIA Nationals

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – The University of Saint Mary women’s wrestling team had seven competitors compete at the NAIA National Championships on Friday and Saturday. Overall, the Spires placed 23rd out of 31 total teams in their final event of the season.

123 weight class: Baylie Koonce was defeated by Life’s Julia Vidallon in 31 seconds to move to the consolation bracket. She then rebounded and defeated Central Methodist’s G. Loza 12-2 in just over five minutes. Koonce’s time would end in the next round of the consolation bracket, as she was defeated by Southern Oregon’s Tara Othman.

Alisha Van Scoy fell in her first match by a score of 10-0, falling into the consolation bracket. She was able to defeat Indiana Tech’s K. VanOver 4-0, but fell in the next round to Jamestown’s Samantha Weeks.

130 weight class: Teya Villalpando started by receiving a bye, but was then defeated by University of Cumberland’s Bridgette Duty, 12-1. She then pulled off two consecutive victories by scores of 8-0 and 6-4 in the consolation round. Villalpando then fell in the end to Life’s Briana Kellin, 8-0.

136 weight class: Victoria Herrera received a bye in the first round before falling to Campbellsville’s Randi Robison 11-2 in 4:54. Herrera was then defeated by Midland’s A. Palimo 6-2 in the consolation bracket.

143 weight class: Makia English started off by falling by a slim margin of 4-0 to Midland’s W. Estrella-Beauchamp in 51 seconds. English was able to win two consecutive bouts in the consolation round by shutouts. Her final match was a 12-1 loss to S. Snow of Indiana Tech.

155 weight class: Emilee Demann started off falling in 2:56 to York’s Bella Mitchell. After a bye in the consolation round, Demann defeated Central Methodist’s Aliyah Ashby 12-0, but her time ended in the next round when she fell 8-0 to Southern Oregon’s Beyonce Garcia.

170 weight class: Jessica Valadez was defeated 4-0 in her first match before receiving a bye in the consolation bracket. She would have a chance in her next match, but fell short in the end to Missouri Valley’s Danielle Saldivar, 5-0.
