[Women's Wrestling] Women's Wrestling Competes In York Tournament Friday and Saturday

YORK, Neb. – The University of Saint Mary women’s wrestling team competed in York, Neb. Friday in a dual tournament and an open individual tournament on Saturday at York College.

The Spires are now 1-6 overall and 0-2 KCAC.

The Spires struggled Friday as they went 1-3 in their duals. Mattea Potter and Charlis Vega picked up the only two victories the team had in their 32-10 loss to the University of Jamestown. Lauren Lopez, Allyssa Bettencourt, and Jassmin Blount picked up victories in their dual against the University of Cumberland. Bettencourt pinned Jacketline Esquivel, while Blount and Lopez won by forfeit. The Spires came up just short against Ottawa, as they fell 22-20. In their final dual of the day, Saint Mary ended Friday with a win after defeating Waldorf University 25-15. Brianna Mancillas, Lopez, Potter and Emilee Demann won from forfeits, while Megan Dougherty picked up her first collegiate victory after pinning Elisa Varela.

On Saturday, Mancillas went 0-2 on the day at the 109-pound weight class. Lopez dropped both of her matches on the day at the 123-pound weight class. Potter was unable to wrestle due injury, so she had to forfeit both of her matches. At the 136-pound weight class, Bettencourt fell in her first match against Diana Dzasezava from Waldorf University by fall and then to Jessica Torres from the University of Cumberlands by forfeit do to injury.

Vega went 3-2 on the day at the 143-pound weight class as she was defeated by Lyric Gonsalvez from Ottawa University in her first match. She then picked up three back-to-back victories with two coming from pins and the other from forfeit. Karyn Larkin went 1-2 at the 143-pound weight class. Blount finished 0-2 after falls to Mahealani Lewis from Midland University and Hailey Budney from the University of the Cumberlands. Denmann picked up one victory by fall over Lewis from Midland at the 155-pound weight class. Dougherty fell to Mikayla Mata from Schreiner University and Mason Claibourn who was unattached. April Penn won her first match at 191-pound weight class by fall over Katerina Pena from Wayland Baptist University. She would fall in the quarterfinal to Agatha Andrews from the University of Jamestown. Penn would bounce back and pin Olivia Ricci from Wayland Baptist University before falling to Joanna Hendricks from Waldorf University in her final match of the day.

“After a bad day yesterday, they did better today” coach Christy Powell said. “There was a lot more energy and enthusiasm out there today”.

The Spires return home on Jan. 31 where they will host the Spire Classic inside Ryan Sports Center.
