The No. 10-ranked Cowley College wrestling team ran into a buzz-saw Tuesday in Pratt, KS, as the Tigers lost 35-7 to No. 6-ranked Pratt Community College. The Tigers defeated a short-handed Colby Community College squad 39-10 in its other dual.
Against Pratt, Cowley found wins hard to come by as its lone victories came from Montez Robinson at 165 pounds and Darius Hamilton at 197 pounds. The Tigers lost three matches by three points or less.
“The reality is we did not wrestle well as a team,” Cowley head coach Beau Vest said. “A lot of little things hurt us in the match with Pratt.”
In the match with Colby, Cowley got a pin from Austin Kincaid and got wins from Dorian Franklin, Alex Rodriguez, and Tyler Bingham. The Tigers benefitted from the Trojans having four open weight classes.
Cowley finishes the regular season with a 11-3 dual mark, with two of its losses coming against the Beavers.
“We need to get healthy and clean up a lot of things before nationals,” Vest said.
Cowley will now have about a month to prepare for the NJCAA National Championships held April 21-22 in Council Bluffs, IA.
“Hopefully, our guys will use this as fuel to put in the work to be ready for the national tournament,” Vest said.
