[Wrestling] Grapplers Kick Off 2019 at National Duals

CUMBERLAND, Ky. – The Swedes wrestling team kicked off 2019 in the National Duals hosted by Southeastern University.

Bethany began their tournament facing no. 1 Grand View. The Vikings showed why they are on top of the polls as they defeated the Swedes 54-0. Although, most matches ended by fall, sophomore, Trey Edwards and senior, Brandon Archuleta, made their opponents work. Archuleta lost by a mere 4-1 decision.

Those two continued to the lead the Swedes as they went on to face Southern Oregon in the second dual of the tournament. Bethany was unable to pull this one out, falling to the Raiders, 42-14. Edwards earned the first points for the Swedes winning by technical fall, 19-3, over Roy Long. Bethany then picked up a few more points when Archuleta bested Hunter Hodges with an 8-3 decision win. Finally, the Swedes picked up a win in the final match of the dual as freshman, Brix Brickey pinned Ryland Boyer in 4:19.

In their final dual of the tournament, the Swedes fell 35-16 to William Baptist. Archuleta again led the Swedes with an 11-3 major decision win over Daryus Webb. He was followed by junior, Nicolas Desch who picked up a 3-2 win over Christian Cara. Sophomore, Dustin Mason won his match due to an open weight class on the side of the Eagles. Finally, William Mason won by 6-2 decision over Tyler Giorgini in the final match of the dual.

The Swedes return to the mat for the annual Kansas Cup hosted by Fort Hays State University. This tournament is set to begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, January 13 inside Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kan.
