[Wrestling] Five Swedes Qualify for National Tournament; Bethany Finishes Second in KCAC …

YORK, Neb. – The Swedes wrestling team finished second in the KCAC Championships. With 138 team points the Swedes had five grapplers qualify for the NAIA National Championships.

Senior, Logan McDowell went 2-2 on the day to finish fifth in the 125 lb. weight class. In the 133 lb. weight group, sophomore, Trey Edwards earned a conference individual title with a 1-0 finish, qualifying for nationals. Senior, Caysen Smith finished fourth place in the 141 lb. weight class with a 1-2 finish in the tournament. In the 149 lb. weight class, freshman, Thomas Hawkins went 3-1 to finish third place in the tournament. Senior, Brandon Archuleta qualified for nationals for the fourth time in his career with a 3-0 finish to take the tournament title in the 165 lb. weight class. Also in the 165lb. weight class, junior, Nicolas Desch finished sixth. Freshman, Josh Wilson finished third in the tournament with a 1-1 record in the 184 lb. weight class. A pair of Swedes competed in the 197 lb. weight class. Freshman, Dustin Mason went 2-0 to take the tournament title, qualifying for nationals, while junior, Joseph Steve finished fifth in the tournament. In the 285 lb. weight class the Swedes qualified two for the national tournament. Freshmen, Brix Brickey and Trey Mason finished first and second, respectively with Brickey finishing 3-0 in the tournament while Mason brought home a 2-1 record.

As a team the Swedes earned 138 team points to finish second to Ottawa who finished the tournament with 145. Five national qualifiers for the Swedes is the second most Bethany has had in the eight years of the program, the most since 2013.

The Swedes will take five to the NAIA National Championships on Friday, March 1 and Saturday, March 2 in the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center in Des Moines, Iowa.
